Florin is a great individual with a heart for his country and a desire to train leaders. He invited me out to share some thoughts on leadership with his group of pastors and church leaders. It was a great experience for me and they said it was great experience for them. I was invited to preach the following sunday morning and then I drove back to say good bye to all my friends in the Sibiu area before I fly out tommorrow (Wednesday).

It has been a tiring couple of weeks for me. I counted and I think that I preached/taught about 6 times last week and lead worship about 6 times as well. Today I took time with my family. I finished my newsletter this morning and then I spent the day taking my family out to dinner. I took Hannah to place that has laser tag, foozball and air hockey and the whole experience (about an hour) only cost me 6 dollars!! She had a great time and I am happy that we had the day together. This evening, we are trying to unwind and rest. Tommorrow I pack, organize, pray and rest... It is going to be a long Journey.

It seems that God is already blessing us and opening doors. We have several new places to speak and share about what God has done in our lives over here in Romania. I am happy for the new opportunities and I am happy that we have such a focused vision to share this time. God has really brought us a long way and taught us much. Thank you Jesus!!

A busy two weeks

I have spent the last several days in a wonderful fog of preperation for my trip to America. It is a bit harder to focus as the thoughts of seeing all my friends and family keep filling my mind. I miss you guys so much. It is such an honor to get to come back and see you all again and visit my favorite country this side of heaven.

In the middle of it all, we had an amazing night on new years eve with the youth and several young couples from the church. The young couples thought they would just be there for a couple of hours, but they ended up having so much fun that they stayed until 6 am in the morning.

There are a few last minute details to finish up and then I can really focus on coming back to america. It is time for the bi-yearly vehicle inspection for our van. There are a couple of things that have to be fixed before we can get that certification and it will cost us probably more than 500 dollars. That with the price of tickets and travel in america makes for a bit of an expensive month. I'm not worried, however. I feel really good about the future. I don't want to put a lot of trust in feelings, but it is something more than that; I have a deep peace in my heart that I believe is from the Lord.

Well, I can't wait to see you all and, thankfully, I don't have to wait.<div style='clear:both; We are a family of four (Michael, Mihaela, Hannah, and Bianca) who God called to sell everything and move to Romania back in the spring 2007. Our home church is City Church of Chattanooga.

In some ways, what we do is complex, but I can summarize it like this. Evangelize, disciple, and develop Spirit led leaders for the Church in Romania. We are working in the city of Sibiu and some surrounding villages (Cisnadie and Hosman). We are partnered with the churches in these villages to help them train up the leaders they badly need. After we had worked in Sibiu, Romania for a while, we noticed that there was a very big lack of leaders in this area. Many of the last generation leaders where either killed or ran off by communism and the young generation leaders fled the country for better jobs once the borders were open. The church leaders that remain do not appear to be willing to invest themselves into rising up new leaders.

However, we have found that there are many people who could make a real difference in their communities and the world if they were only given proper training. We accomplish this training through several means;
1. We teach youth at one of our churches.
2. We are offering an after hours leadership training course at the local Christian High School.
3. We are starting a Video based bible college in the village of Hosman.

Hosman holds a special place in our hearts (and God's). We have seen him move on life after life in this little village. There are stories of women getting saved who's husbands are violently opposed to them being Christians. A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure to led a couple of those husbands to Jesus and they are now attending church with their wives and bringing their children with them. (they will be baptized within a few weeks).
In this picture to the left, I am praying for a group of people who gave their heart to Christ. We baptized them just a few weeks ago and some of them will be the ones attending our bible college.

This is just the start of what we want to do here. We are asking God for a rich harvest of Spirit led, talented young men and women who will help lead the church of Romania into a lasting revival.

Young and old are hungry for this type of training. We are finding that both High School students and working men and women are willing to set aside the time to learn how to become better leaders right where they are.

Join us as we disciple this amazing group of young and old. So much has happened in the last few months. Most of it back ground and preperation work for what is coming next. However, one really wonderful thing has developed recently. About a month ago, a group of orphans started meeting in our house for prayer, singing and fellowship. They had felt rejected and excluded by all the local churches and most were not really attending church at all. They have a real hunger for God, but they can't find someone to just understand them and accept them.

Now, they are finding that need met at our house. It has been so wonderful ministering to them and helping them. They have lots of questions about God. Once they understood that we are not there to judge them, they started to open up and share all sorts of issues with us. On saturdays, we go to the park and play sports with them and on Tuesdays, they come to the house to fellowship. Unfortanetly, the local church we work with is fairly hard hearted when it comes to working with this type of person. After training the youth group for over two years in the area of outreach and leadership. I was actually surprised to find that they were completely unwilling to reach out to these lost and hurting people. In fact, most of them actively avoided them. After several frustrating experiences, we decided that we will keep these two groups seperated.

It makes me ask some questions. Why do we go to church? What is church really for? Why do we listen to all the sermons? What are we really preparing to do in this life? Is it to sit on pews and tell other, already like minded people what they already know again and again? Why do we feel so confident in our holiness and Christianity? I am praying for the youth group and teaching through a series on love for the next several months. Its amazing how lightely we take the issue of loving others when we are good at reading our bibles and praying. Pray with me that God may open there hearts and help them to be broken about the reality of their actions. Also pray for the leadership to get a new vision of what it means to follow God.

The youth are dear friends and we love them. I am hoping and praying that 2009 is the year when their christianity becomes deeply real. I am believing that God is going to turn some hearts inside out. I am praying that some youth will begin to weep over the lost and the hurting. It seems that after being here for 2 years, we are finding out that God's purpose here is to break up some stony ground so the seeds may grow.

Ministry Starting Up Again

We have spent a bit of time making adjustments to the youth group this last month. We have set in place our theme for the year and started a long series of lessons on Love as a way of life for a Christian. We also established a slightly different order of service and it seems things are going well.

It's amazing how God opens doors where you don't expect and closes them where you do. I mentioned to one parent at Hannah's kindergarten the possibility of teaching one hour of English a week for their children and before you know it, I am being sought out by the other parents. After a quick talk with the teacher and then the director of the school, I am given the go ahead to begin an English hour for the 5 year old class Hannah is a part of. We, of course, will be doing this free of charge.

It is hard to over state how important this is. We will be able to establish relationships with the teachers and the parents in a secular environment. On top of that, the teachers have already asked if I will teach them as well at a different hour. I plan to agree to this, but first I want to start with the children an get that established.

We also started back up our adult english class that takes place with some of our church members and their lost family. I was not expecting this level of english teaching, but it looks like God has a plan for me in this. Please pray that God gives me wisdom on how to handle this.

We are also in the beginning phases of planning for a bicycle outreach trip this summer. If things go according to plan, it will be 6 days on the road bicycling from village to village to preach the Gospel and camping out at nights. We have one couple who is experienced with this who is helping us to make plans, but they will most likely not be able to come with us.

All in all, this is turning into a very joyful year for us. It is so good to be here doing the Lord's work and reaching the lost.

Back in Sibiu

Hello everyone. It has been a long road, and a lot of good things happened, but it is good to be back here with my family in Sibiu. We had a great Christmas day and my wife surprised me with a birthday party at church (thought I was going for a prayer meeting.) I just got done spending a lot of time making plans for the future, and it looks like this is going to be a great year.

We had a wonderful time in the States as well. We managed to get around to Nashville, Chattanooga, various locations in Georgia and even had time to stop by and see some family in South Carolina. I will say that it was very hard being away from my wife and new baby for a month and 1/2, but God turns all things together for good.

Right now it is FREEZING. It snowed on a couple different occasions since I got back, so everything is kind of a messy white. In the immediate future is a big, all night newyears eve party with the youth, and lots of visiting with people. I will then have lots to do establishing Bianca as an American citizen and getting Hannah her Romanian citizen ship (both will be dual citizens.) Also, we will be starting the adult english class back up and the morning prayer times.

All of this is good, but we are really looking forward to starting our evangelism outreach efforts. The colleges start back in about a week and we want to be ready to begin our outreach then.

Pray for us and if any of you have some prayer request, leave them in the comments and we will pray for you.

Quick update

It has been a non-stop adventure from day one. We have had quite a wonderful time and a lot of good visits. After a week in Chattanooga, we headed off to see my uncle in South Carolina. After a good two day visit, we headed to Nashville to meet with Bob phillips and visit his church. Today is sunday (afternoont) and I can say that we had a simple wonderful visit here so far. They were such good friends in their visit to Romania, and are being even more so as host here in Nashville.

Hannah is doing good, and having fun visiting the children, but I think she is getting to the point of missing home. And so do I. We miss our family and house, but we also miss our church and friends. I even miss the busy streets of Sibiu. Honestly, we keep talking about Sibiu as home now. Don't get me wrong. I love my home country (USA) but I love what God is allowing us to do in Romania, and I love living there. No country is perfect, and no family or church is perfect. So, I have to say that I continue to see our opportunity to serve over in Romania as a real honor.

God bless all you guys.

Arrival

After about 29 hours of travel, me and Hannah finally landed in Chattanooga Tenn. Things are looking great and God has ironed out all the little details up to this point. It is amazing how much God does for us in the little things. I guess I want to keep this post short and sweet. Thank you Jesus for all the love and help and friendship you offer us.

Last Couple of Meetings done!

We got to meet with the elder board of filadelfia church today and it was a very warm and encouraging experience. It was a day of remembering all that God did for us in the last year. We were able to say a warm thank you for all the freedom we were given to minister here in Sibiu, Romania, and in turn we were thanked for our time of serving so far. We finished confirming our plans for next year (as we stated before.)

We also had our last youth group meeting until the time we get back. I asked the youth to pray about what they think God would have them do for the youth group next year. We are also entering into a time of seeking the Lord for the vision for next year. We had a chance to go around the room and each remember a significant moment from last year. There was also a wonderful time of prayer and worship.

Next year, we are not wanting to try to repeat what happened this summer. We want to see God do something new. It is usually a mistake to camp out on the mountain top. I guess my prayer could be summarized as this. "God show us your miracles in the valley as well." So, we wait and pray and expect God to do wonderful things this year as well.

Anticipation

Just a little over a week and we leave for home. It's going to be an odd transition to be sure. There are a lot of questions in my mind about how it will be to see my home land and friends after having been gone so long. I'm certain I have changed, and a lot of time has passed for you guys as well.

I was a little worried about being forgotten, but lately I have received many e-mails with request for me to stop by and visit. I can't tell you how comforting that is. I really miss you guys. There's just nothing like the soil you grew up on.

My only real desire is that God will guide my steps and lead me. I'm at a point in my life that I'm getting over the need to have things work out in one certain way. God has done so many beautiful things for us and I have discovered that I do a bad job guessing what he is planning next. Looking back, I can easily say that I like his plans better than the ones that I came up with. (Oh, how I wish I am not so short sighted.) God continues to amaze me with his goodness and grace.

You guys are in my heart and mind, and we are praying for you. Things are going very well with her and Mihaela is also feeling better and better. I was able to get a lot of work done this week and on top of that, I had a meeting with the local pastor and we were able to confirm all the plans for next year.

I'll be doing a lot of what I did this year, but with a few small differences. We will be doing less children's ministry, and more evangelistic outreaches. We will be continuing to work with the youth and do the youth camps, and we will also be starting back with the adult English class (God willing.)

This year can't help but be different. We have a much deeper connection with the community and are really seeing some great things happen. Our desire is to keep deep hunger after God as the center focus of all we do this next year. We praise God for last year, and we are so excited about this year coming up.

Baby Blues

Things are generally very blessed right now. However, that doesn't mean we get to skip staying up at all hours of the night trying to teach a newborn how to feed. It also doesn't mean that I get to skip feeling the parental stress of taking care of a new born and a very tired and hurting wife. I'm just glad that I managed to keep my eyes on how good God has been.

It is amazing how easy it is to forget all the good blessings of God. We are so often like the little 4 year old at Christmas. Ripping open one gift after another, and when the child gets to the end of it all, he/she says "wheres the rest, is that all". It amazes me to watch the transformation on children's faces at the end of Christmas day. Some look very content, but some sink into a sort of mild depression or sadness.

Actually, the gifts loose their thrill if we loose sight of the giver. When we keep our eyes on the giver, we realize that the gift is actually a sign of something else; love!!! We realize that every little blessing God puts in our lives is actually his tender touches and concerned care. He is literally hovering over us like a mother over a baby. He longs for us to receive his love, and despite what some may say, he wants us to feel his love.

Yes, I will say it again, He wants us to FEEL his love. He wants us to have peace and joy. These come as an outpouring of his love in our lives. He wants us to sense his presence and to abide in it and stay in it.

I know that he takes us through times where we don't see him or since him. This is in order to make sure that we keep a firm grip and keep seeking him. However, he wants us in general to dwell in his light and life, basking in the smile from his face. This is God's idea for us. He longs to walk with us and spend time with us.

WOW!!!

So Proud of my Wife

Today my wife came home from the hospital with Bianca. As I am typing, all the laundry and cleaning is done, Bianca is peaceful sleeping and my wife has time to do some reading. A little bit earlier, my wife started crying and I went to comfort her. I was assuming of course that it was some of that post natal stuff and simply wanted to be there for her. However, I got a pleasant surprise when I asked her what she was crying about.

Turns out that she was just so thankful that God had brought her safely through and had really blessed the whole process. While she was in the hospital, she had seen a lot of suffering; people without the opportunity for the type of medical help we had received, women who had no support from home and had to do it all on their own.

Mihaela was deeply moved by what she saw and hopes to be able to make a difference someday soon. I think she can, especially since she has good connections through her radio show program, and an ability to stay the course with her dreams. I can't wait to see what doors God opens up for her, but I have to say...

I am proud of my wife. Even though she is aching, hurting and suffering some unexpected back pain, she just is thankful and wants to help others. How about all you guys pray for me to be able to follow her example.

Holding and Angel

I got to hold Bianca today some more. I'm not able to stay at the hospital as much as I would like to (The hospital won't let me), but I was able to go very several lengthy visits in the last two days. This last visit, I helped with a diaper change and I was able to burp Bianca after a feeding. She for sure has her mothers eyes, but beyond that I can't really tell. She seems more relaxed than Hannah was when she was born.

Mihaela is very happy and content. She is recovering well and is enjoying her time with the baby. We took some time to pray over her and speak blessings into her life. We have waited so long for her and now she is here. It feels great and somehow, more complete in our family now.

Hannah was happy to see her little sister as well and wanted to hold her. We'll let her once we are home with her, because the hospital has pretty strict regulations about children. (it was a miracle she got to see her at all.) That being said, her first reaction when she heard about Bianca being born was to say "Wow, Yes, now we can go visit america". (She knew that shortly after the birth we were going for a trip to America.) What a sweety. She is so impatient to visit with her friends and family.

Brand New Baby

We have a brand new baby!!! Praise God, everything went wonderful. The baby is officially 5 days late now, and it is past time to meet the new addition to our family.

As a father, I'm trying to prepare myself for this new adventure. One trap that I am trying to avoid is thinking that this baby will be the same as Hannah. I want to treat this child as a separate individual. It's good to be sensitive to the differences in learning styles, discipline techniques, what is motivating and what is discouraging. I'm also praying a lot.

Mihaela is busy packing her bags and getting all the clothes pulled out. I'll be finishing up some house choirs right after I'm done typing this. Hannah is staying at her grandmothers, and a lot of people are praying.

Today, we meet with Daniel and Uca at church. They have officially moved to Sibiu, and I can't tell you how glad I am about that. They have been such good friends, and I look forward to a bright future of working together with them.

I realized today how many friends I have in Sibiu and at this church. It is more than I can count at the moment. I may have given up a lot to come here, but I sure did gain a lot more. So, here is a big hello and thank you to all my friends, both here in Sibiu, Romania and back home in the good old U.S.A.. Thanks for all you've done.

Travel Plans Update

There have been several days lately of planning and waiting. I've had a little extra time to read the bible and practice on the guitar. I don't know what days may come (surely both some hard and some easy), but if God is there with us, then it will be just fine in the end.

Focus of Missions Work

We really have only one "Mission." It's obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit. I'm learning that more and more. What has really struck me lately is that this is something I can do no matter where I am or what job I have. I have begun to really understand what it means to be a "missions minded" person.

I'd always heard it said, but honestly, until I spent a year and a half out of country, I didn't really understand it. Mostly, I'm just learning that God uses broken people. The next revelation after that one is that there is only one kind of person and that is a "broken" person. Though some of us may not be willing to admit it.

More than ever before, I am impressed with God and his ways. I am blown away by his love. I'm just now getting to understand a little bit about how willing he is to love the unlovable and to help the ones that hate. I am astounded by how unaffected he is by our evil. He turns right back around and heals. He is the one who touches filthy leper skin and makes it whole.

That sounds like the kind of God that I need.

Morning Thoughts

I'm just about to head to church, and I've been thinking lately that all I want God to do is be glorified in my life no matter what else happens. True joy for me is when I know that God's will is being done and that he is happy with my life. I don't really even care what happens to me so much. God has been so good and careful with me for so long. I just want to praise him, I want to worship him. I almost died, in fact, I almost made international news. let me tell you about it.

A group of short term missionaries had arrived a week earlier to help us run some Kid's Games out reach in a local village. They had been hard a work all week and we were all tired, but happy. As a final touch, they got to come up in the mountains to the retreat camp (some cabins and crude facilities in the Carpathian Mountains). It had been raining that week, so the wood was a bit wet. Normally, I have no problem starting a fire, but on that day I was struggling.

Of course as you have probably witnessed, when a man is having trouble starting a fire, all other men get a small burst of testosterone and feel the need to make it happen themselves. I had actually managed to get a small flicker going and was busy blowing on it and keeping out of the smoke when the following took place....

You see there were two other guys there. One who was a trusted friend, the kind who is steady and true and thinks before acting. He was a local and a long time friend of mine. The other guy was one of the visiting missionaries and seemed like he was trying to prove something all week. Don't get me wrong, he is a great guy and I would have him back in an instant.

Now, as I was blowing on the very small flame (which was actually growing bigger) I heard my first friend say "let's use a little GAS." I didn't react to much to this because I knew he would be careful under normal circumstances and I honestly would trust him (even today) with my life. Well, I looked up and he had come over to the fire with a 20-30 gallon can of gas (full)!!!!! I immediately stopped blowing and looked up. ...

Now the next bit happened rather fast. I was just about to say something when friend number two starts going "O O, let me, let me, I do it all the time" One thing I have learned is that people who say I do it all the time haven't done it very much at all. I was in the middle of saying (read in slow motion now with a slightly lower voice) "noooooo, dddooonnnn'ttttt dddddoooooo iiiiiiiittttt!!!" but it was too late, friend one, not knowing the character of friend two, handed over the gas can. I immediately started scrambling and clawing and running and rolling out of the way. I ended up about 100 feet away with no real knowledge of how I got there. All I know is that in the middle of the scramble, I saw a burst of flame as he casually tossed the gas on the fire.

I also recall seeing the flame arc back to the can. I waited for the big, earth shattering KABOOM!!!, but the immediate result was only about a 2 feet tall jet of fire. When friend number 2 saw that his can was burning, he set it down quick and ran. I don't blame him, and I am glad he made that choice. I felt certain that at any moment, the fire would trace back into the can and blow us, the entire set of cabins, my wife, my daughter and all the youth group into an early meeting with Jesus.

Friend number one ran to get water and throw it on the can. I knew this wasn't a good idea, but I didn't stop him. In fact, I didn't react at all. The next thing I did was the best emergency action I have ever had in my life. I hit my knees and started praying like never before. I purposely calmed my heart and listened to the Lord. I forced myself to ignore every outside influence, and I prayed. As I prayed, God spoke very, very clearly to me just one word. "Blanket". I said, "yes, Lord"

I jumped up and ran to the nearest small cabin, grabbed a thick blanket and ran to the can. I said one last prayer "God my life is in your hands" and then I threw the blanket on the can.

I picked up the blanket and the fire was out. I cannot begin to describe to you the feelings I had at that point. I will say this; for the next 20 minutes I got alone with God and thanked him passionately for preserving my life. It was in those moments that I realized that I was not afraid of death. I was not thinking about how to preserve my own life. I was thinking about what I needed to do to save the lives of those around me. I was pleased to realize that I was not scared of death, or of meeting God. I know we may say that we aren't, but there is always a doubt until we are faced with the actual fact of it. Well, that is past me now. I'm glad to know that in the middle of pressure, I remembered what was most important. Prayer!!!!

(P.S. We had a very nice fire for the rest of the evening.)

Normal days waiting for extraordinary moments

So, the baby should be due at any moment. We just got back from the doctor checkup and the news is all good. There have been a lot of normal days lately, but they are all waiting for big days. Soon I'm going for a visit in America, and soon I will be holding a new baby daughter. The trick is making the best use of these days. I have found that if I don't do well in these normal days, then the extraordinary days tend to not be so enjoyable.

I'm trying to make something work for these normal days. I guess at this point my number one goal is to become more aware of my own brokenness and need of God and to move step by step closer to Jesus in my personal time. All I know is I need him and I love him.

There have been some interesting moments lately. I walked with my daughter Hannah recently and had a nice conversation (thanks to Greg for the inspiration to record these moments.)
I was walking down the side walk and came across some fall leaves on the ground. I started to step on them underfoot and said to my Daughter, "You know, I really like dry leaves" My daughter responded most profoundly "Why?" I said "Well, I guess I like the way they crunch when I step on them" My daughter looked at the leaves and proceeded to walk all over them ...crunch, crunch, crunch. She then looked up at me and said "I don't really like them so much, I like mommy and daddy." With a big smile, I said "Well I like Hannah" and then I added "A whole lot more than leaves" My daughter said "really, wow, well... leaves can't talk anyways" To which I responded (tongue in cheek) "Actually, that is one of the things I like about them." My daughter looked at me like I was weird, and we both smiled.
